This is the effect of air pollution on the heart
Experts say that even in small amounts, the changes in the heart of people who are constantly exposed to air pollution are similar to those seen in the early stages of a heart attack.
A study of 4,000 people in the UK found that the hearts of people living along busy roads with loud noises were on average larger than those living in low-pollution areas.
The people included in this study are residents of areas that are less polluted than the UK's Pollution Level Directive.
Researchers have called on the government to immediately reduce air pollution levels.
A team of scientists at Queen Mary University in London analyzed health data from people without heart problems.
The researchers then examined the level of pollution in the area where the people lived.
Effect
The study found that high pollution levels were directly related to the size of the right and left ventricles of the heart.
When the concentration of PM2.5 increases by one microgram per cubic meter and nitrogen dioxide increases by 10 micrograms per cubic meter, the size of the heart increases by one percent.
According to the doctor who led the statistical analysis of the study, this is comparable to the effect of a state of constant inactivity or high blood pressure.
According to him, air pollution should be considered as a risk factor that can be solved.
Physicians and the general public all need to be aware of where they live, such as high blood pressure, cholesterol and weight, for a healthy heart.
The study did not include the actual location of the people. But most people lived outside the UK's major cities where PM 2.5 levels were lower than the prescribed levels.
The British Heart Foundation, which assisted in the study, suggested that the government and public health agencies take immediate steps to improve air quality.
Five ways to avoid pollution
Stay away from busy roads - There is a lot of pollution in places where there is a lot of traffic
Use access roads other than the main road - these roads are relatively clean and have less traffic
Identify places with polluted air - engines are often open when traffic is light. In that case, especially the traffic lights will become a 'haze of pollution'. So you have to think while crossing the road
Walk uphill as vehicles descend - this way you can avoid the smoke. This is the right choice
Ordinary face masks are not very effective, special types of masks are cumbersome. Instead, scientists advise against using busy roads
